The Rincón de La Vieja National Park is located in the mountain range of Guanacaste, province of Guanacaste and Alajuela, 27-km northeast of Liberia City.

Created by means of the Law No. 5398, of October 23,1973. Has an extension of 14.083.9 hectares.

One the biggest benefits of this wild area is the protection of the hydrographic river basins. In this park exist probably the mayor population in wild state of the "Guaria Morada", the national flower. Has a great tourist potential due to the attractive it posses, especially the great beauty and the geologic characteristics.

The solid Rincón de La Vieja, of 1.916 Mts. of altitude, is a compose structure. In the top has been identifying nine eruptive points, one active and the others inactive in degradation process. To the south of the crater you can find a pure water lagoon.

The last strong eruptive period, with launching of big ash clouds and earthquakes and subterranean noises, happen in 1966 and 1970. The recent eruptions happen in 1983, 1984 and 1991. Actually the Rincón de La Vieja present activity.

In the foot of the volcano, of the south size are the areas called Las Pailas and the Hornilllas, which covers a surface of 50 hectares. Exist there thermal fountains that give place to hot broken waters, lagoons occupied by small depressions in which the water boil continually, orifices in which vapor flow elevates during the rainy season and small mud volcanoes of different shapes.

The Rincón de La Vieja presents diversities habitats due the differences in altitude and precipitation, the volcanic eruptive effect and the type of watershed. In the lower parts the most common trees are: the laurel, the guanacaste, the aceituno, the ardillo, the naked Indian, the bitter cedar and the capulin blanco.

In the intermediate pates the solid, between 1200 and 1400 m.o.s.l, the most abundance trees are: the copey, the cuajada, the jacaro danto, the papayillo, the burro ratón, the yos, tha iguano, the oak, the Killing people and the white cypress.

From the 1400mts up to the top, the forests are short tall and the trees are covers of muss and toras. The most common species are the copey, the papayillo, and the crespo oacute. The top of the volcano is cover by ash and presents little vegetation, some of the plants are the copey and the poor umbrella.

The copey is sometimes decorating forests, there the cats, the dantas, the gongolonas and the pavas negras are very common.

In the park has been observed 257 bird's species: the calandra, the pavón, the linnet, the oropendula de Montezuma, the swallow, the tucán, the red widow, the hummingbird, the ropopo, the white front parrot and the guaco.

Some of the mammals are: the wild goat, the saíno, the guatusa, the tolomuco, the armadillo, the sloth of two fingers, the bear, and the congo, white face monkeys. The insects are very abundant, you can notice the beautiful morfo butterflies from which exist 4 species.
