This refuge is located at the 200-mts. zone of beach between Punta India and the desembocadura of Nosara River that includes Ostional town. It belongs to Santa Cruz County in the province of Guanacaste.

Its importance is the real protection given to the wild life of this area, which includes Lora turtle, Baula turtle and a lot of sea birds.

The flora of the refuge is a tree and plants that grows in sandy lands, like coconut palm, royal palm and "piñuelos".

Animal life is abundant: several kinds of sea and land birds, sea turtles, some mammals, a few reptiles and other sea animals.
