MONTEVERDE REGION
History
Monteverde, nestled high in the Tilarán mountains, is a magical place. In 1951 an oaxcart trail led 11 Quaker families through pastoral landscape with unforgettable views to a mountain heaven of peace. Today, visitors and scientists
folck to this ecological treasure, home of the Resplendent Quetzal.
Monteverde and the nearby village of Santa Elena are still pacifist communities strongly comitted to protecting their misty cloud forest, pastoral lifestyle and rich
web of life within. Once a frequent and fabled reptilian resident "Golden Toad" or sapo dorado disappeared years ago, but lives on in area lore.
